Renewable Energy

Our “Energy Gardens”– also known as our anaerobic digesters – produce clean, low-cost energy in the form of biogas that can be converted into electricity, heat and natural gas suitable for use in a variety of applications.

Take a Virtual Tour

  • Electricity – We use biogas or syngas to fuel a combined heat and power (CHP) unit to produce electricity and heat. The electricity can either be sold into the electric grid or used at an industrial site. The heat can be used for industrial processes or district heating.

  • Pipeline-grade natural gas – We clean biogas to a methane content of 97% and sell it into existing natural gas pipelines. These pipelines typically transport gas to be used for electricity production at a combined cycle power plant, for building heating, or for industrial use.

  • Compressed natural gas (CNG) – We clean biogas to a methane content of 98% and compress it to 3000 psi to be used as a transportation fuel. This fuel can also be run in a diesel-CNG dual-system tank, reducing demand on diesel engines.

  • Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF) – We create a mix of refined, low-moisture, high-heat value materials like wood chips, bark and shavings that can replace coal in industrial boilers.

Benefits

Creating and using clean, renewable energy presents a myriad of benefits.

  • Energy independence
  • Green jobs
  • Vibrant local economies
  • Reduced climate change
  • Local pollution reduction

Did You Know?
If we had harnessed the energy from the organic materials disposed by North America in 2009 – enough to fill a football stadium more than 50 times every three days – we could have produced enough electricity to power over 2.5 million homes.
